Did you know that to lose just one pound of fat you are required to burn around 3500 calories and that’s over the amount you already burn during a normal day doing activities?  Now this is an awful lot and it wouldn’t be advisable to try and do that on a daily basis, so what you need to do is work out how many calories you need to burn for you to get rid of those unwanted calories.   Here is a guide to beginning your journey.

  1. First you need to work out your BMR this stands for basic metabolic rate.  This is what your body required to uphold it’s every day functions such as digestion and breathing.  This is the bare minimum that your body requires to function, remember that a calculator is never going to have 100% accuracy so you may find that you will have to adapt this number as you continue your journey.
  2. Next you need to find out your activity level.  To do this, you need to use a calculator that will figure out exactly how many calories you burn while you are doing things like exercising, standing, lifting weights or even just sitting.  You can even buy a monitor that will tell you your heart rate and how many calories you are burning.
  3. There are websites you can use that will keep a count of your calories or you can just use a journal to record everything that you eat each day, don’t forget to add the calories of your drinks as well.
  4. Then you need to take the total of your BMR, then add your ‘activity calories’ and then take away the food calories and that will give you your total.  If you are eating more calories than you are eating, you will of course gain weight.   However, if you are burning more calories than you eat, you will lose the weight.
